What is a Shadow Teacher?
Shadow teachers (also called paraprofessionals or educational aides) provide individualized support to students with special needs in mainstream classroom settings. You'll work one-on-one with students to help them access the curriculum, develop social skills, and succeed alongside their peers.
Key Responsibilities
- Academic Support: Help students understand and complete classroom assignments at their own pace
- Behavior Guidance: Implement positive behavior strategies and IEP accommodations
- Social Integration: Facilitate peer interactions and help students develop social skills
- Safety & Supervision: Ensure student safety and well-being throughout the school day
- Communication: Maintain regular contact with teachers, therapists, and parents about student progress
- Data Collection: Document observations and progress toward IEP goals
- Transition Support: Assist with transitions between activities and locations
Qualifications & Requirements
- High school diploma required; some college coursework in education, psychology, or related field preferred
- Previous experience working with children, especially those with special needs
- Understanding of common learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and behavior challenges
- Familiarity with IEP implementation and special education best practices
- Patient, compassionate, and adaptable approach to teaching
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with educational teams
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and keep up with active children
- Must pass background check and TB test
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Special Education, Psychology, or related field
- Previous paraprofessional or classroom aide experience
- Training in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) or similar methodologies
- CPR and First Aid certification
- Bilingual capabilities (especially English/Spanish)
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay Range: $25-$45 per hour based on experience and credentials
